Advice

Over the next several weeks, I am going to spend part of my day talking to students.  While my employer has a terrific career services group, many of my teaching colleagues like the idea of having someone from HR come talk to students.

Maybe they want me to scare them a little.  Have the scary HR lady come in and tell some stories ...

I don't think that I have to be mean or scary.  I need to be honest.  Here is some of what honest sounds like.

You will not start at the top.
Your materials - cover letter, resume, writing sample - have to be PERFECT.
You need to know what is out there about you.  Online reputation management.
You will need to be flexible.
You need to do your research and your homework.  About everything.
You will not start at the top.

Anything else I should add?

Everything else cascades from this.  Stories no doubt to follow.   Happy Wednesday.

Don't overstate your skills and stress your desire to learn. Be punctual.

Have fun shaping young minds! :)

Find a good career mentor.
Learn from experienced people around you; just because you tweet and they don't doesn't mean they're out of touch.
