Mandatory fun

I love reading some of articles, blogs, and stories of holiday traditions in the workplace.  Some are laugh-out-loud (Ask a Manager) and others, well, I just feel sorry for those who have to endure such nonsense.  Sometimes, they are one in the same.

I refer to those events as mandatory fun.  Few want to go but many do out of obligation and responsibility.

The last few years, our HR office has settled into a truly wonderful rhythm.  It's low impact, easy for everyone, and positively enjoyable.

We go out to breakfast.

And it's not just any breakfast, it's breakfast at one of the area's locally-owned, premier breakfast joints.  The food comes on multiple plates.  The coffee cups don't match.  The staff have been there forever.  It's good.  Really good.

We enjoy our coffee, our meals, and each other's company for the first 90 minutes of the day.  No hurry.  We are in the office by 9:30 and have the day to get our work done.

No after-hours shindigs, no white elephants, no games.  Just easy.  The perfect way to celebrate the holiday before we wrap up the year.

That is an awesome way to celebrate the season! It is a fun, relaxed environment....and those types of restaurants have good food! No deciding what special dress to wear, no running to the hairdresser to get your hair all 'frood' up or the manicurist....just easy and relaxed.
